Layered surfaces are created through a sensory and intuitive approach, allowing Mary to explore the nature of paint.
A process of repeated application, reduction and removal allows layered mark-making to be built up; concealing, revealing and obscuring elements yet never quite deleting. This invites the viewer to lean in, to examine incidental traces and textural surfaces.

The deliberate relinquishing of complete control by the artist through materials is intentional. Each work is a process of control and discovery as compositions reveal themselves.
