Mary Garner

b. London in 1985. Mary Garner trained at Wimbledon College of Art, Kensington & Chelsea and Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh. She is a recipient of the Anna Mahler award and the Royal Scottish Academy Kinross scholarship and has exhibited across the UK and Italy. Mary lives and works in Portobello, Edinburgh.

Works are created through a sensory and intuitive approach, allowing Mary to explore the nature of paint. While often informed by lunar and maritime imagery and our natural world, a dynamic push and pull with materials creates abstracted arrangements that primarily explore atmospheric mood and feel.

A process of repeated application, reduction and removal enables layered surfaces to be built up; concealing, revealing and obscuring elements yet never quite deleting. The relinquishing of complete authority is intentional. Each work is a balance of control and discovery as compositions reveal themselves. The viewer is invited to lean in, to examine incidental traces, subtle depths and textural mark-making.
